Q1: What qualities do leaders have?

In Room24 we are finishing up a unit about leadership entitled Follow My Lead. (Information on our Leadership Summit here.) Students are working on answering four questions in the process of developing leadership skills. Each of the four questions is a separate post.

Room24 students: sign in and answer the questions as a comment, or ask a new question that comes to mind.

Visitors: Please answer the questions yourself, ask a question of my students or provide a comment about your own path to leadership

Our first question is this:
What is leadership? What qualities do I already have that are similar to that of great leaders?

Leadership Summit

We have been learning all about leadership in Room24! Now it is time for our second annual Leadership Summit on December 5th from 10:00 to 11:30.

The Leadership Summit is a chance for fourth graders to reflect on what it means to be a leader. They will be reflecting on these four questions:
  1. What qualities to leaders have?
  2. What problems exist in my school or community that could be solved if I were a leader?
  3. What obstacles stand in my way that prevent me from being a leader?
  4. What goals can I set for myself to get past these obstacles?
Here are the slides we will be looking at on Friday. Embeddable from WizIq:

We need your involvement! Here's how:
We will present the answers to these questions on December 5th in three ways. First, we will publish them on this blog. The questions will be posted and students will be commenting. You can comment too. Second, we will Tweet them (follow room24). What is Twitter? It is a way for students to respond online through 140 character "micro-blogs". We will also invite anyone to join us in a live conversation via WiziQ where participants can address these questions themselves, thinking about themselves when they were young, giving advice to Room24 or sharing a story of a great student leader. Sign up for this free session here.

We look forward to sharing all that we have learned.

Saturn

This is our photo story on the planet Saturn. One thing we did really well was choosing pictures. Next time we will do more recording. Something I learned about the Solar System is that the inner planets are solid and the outer planets are made out of gas. A question I still have is witch is the last planet Ceris or Eires? While we were working I think we were really creative.

Sun

This is a photostory on the Sun. One of the things we did well was recording. Next time we will add more information. Something I learned was that the Sun has hydrogen gasses. One question is, do we have more than 1 sun? We think we were curious.

Neptune

Qur planet is NEPTUNE!I think that we were really good at helping eachother out with ideas. We took a really long time with the pictures.I learned that Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. Why isn't Pluto a planet anymore? I think we were thinking a lot together.

planets. Why Is Mars not able to have people on it?
While we were working we were thinkers and we were open minded.

One thing we do well is work together.
Next time we will do this differently by choosing different pictures.
Something I learned about the solar system is Uranus got hit by a comet and that's what made its rings.
A question we still have is: Are there aliens on Uranus?

Hello Fourth Grade!

Well here we are... it is fall and time for the beginning of school again. I am looking forward to another exciting year of learning. Believe it or not, I learn a lot every year just like my fourth graders do.

My wish this year is that this blog will become a place to:

  • publish your writing
  • create projects for IB
  • make contact with people from around the world
  • build a community of learners that is curious about the world around them
This week, I would like you to sign in to the blog and introduce yourself. Remember, don't use your last name. Tell everyone one thing you have learned so far in the fourth grade and one interesting thing that happened this summer.

We're Done!

Remember this post? This was the first one that I created for my class back on August 16th. Since then we have posted 100 times! (I can't count the number of comments) We have had 3,669 hits and 443 different visitors to this blog. You have published writing, movies and even participated in a conference using WiziQ and inviting people from outside of our room to participate.

I can't express how proud I am of you, students in room24. This blog will take a break over the summer, and then will re-emerge again with new students. But you all are the originals and you should be very proud of all that you accomplished this year. You are much smarter now then you were back then because of your persistence, teamwork and risk-taking. You will always be members of this blog, sign-in and post whenever you like.

Good Luck in Fifth Grade! (but you don't need it)

Leadership Summit!

We have been learning all about leadership in Room24. Each student researched a great leader (some researched a negative leader) and they spent some time identifying the qualities that made them great leaders. Now it is time to make some connections between those great leaders and ourselves. We will spend some time this week addressing these four questions:

  1. What is leadership?
  2. What problems exist in my school or community that could be solved if I were a leader?
  3. What obstacles stand in my way that prevent me from being a leader?
  4. What goals can I set for myself to get past these obstacles?
We will present the answers to these questions on Friday by publishing them on this blog and Tweeting them (follow room24). We will also invite anyone to join us in a live conversation via WiziQ where participants can address these questions themselves, thinking about themselves when they were young, giving advice to Room24 or sharing a story of a great student leader. Why? Why? Why?!!

We've been talking and thinking a lot about "why". Why are we learning fractions in math? Why are we learning about comparing and contrasting in reading? Why do we need to learn the writing process? Why are we learning about India, China, Australia, Spain and the US? I am usually the one telling why...

My question today is this: Why do we have reading buddies? What is the purpose of inviting the first graders to our room to read them our writing or to help them with their writing, or to introduce them to our blog or Twitter?

Tell me what you think.

How do the nerves work?
What is an endoskeleton?
What are the names of the bones?
Why do we need cellls?
How many bones do we have?
How does it look inside your body?
What is our body made of?
What is a ligament?
How does the diaphragm work?
What is carbon dioxide?
How tall can a human get?
What are bones made of?
How small can a human get?
How much blood can you lose?
How much can you sweat in one day?
How many times does your heart beat in one day?
How do you get an asthma attack?
How does the brain work?
How do you get a heart attack?

I Can't Be Modest!

Room 24, YOU ROCK!

We had the school spelling bee today and our four participants who had been diligently studying their words over the last few weeks, took 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place! WOW!

AG took 3rd place and will be representing us at the district bee at Dupont on the 28th. I will be there with my daughter and we will be cheering her, and everyone on! She was sick as a dog the morning of the bee, but she stuck it out and went home to recover right after.

Great job to HM... "paddock" was the one that took him out, but fourth place is awesome and he was cool as a cucumber up there! MT was so relaxed, she doesn't even remember what word she missed. Next year in fifth grade, she is determined to do better than fifth place, she'll be back! AM missed "vigilante", which I have trouble spelling with a dictionary.

I am also proud of all of room 24 for cheering on your classmates and giving them all high 5s and pats on the back for a great effort. We all achieve more when we work together as a team.

Donuts for everyone!
